The FERS Supplement: The Bridge Federal Employees Forget to Count

Retire under FERS before 62 and a supplement may pay you a Social-Security-sized bridge — which changes when it makes sense to claim the real thing.

Federal employees make the Social Security decision with a piece on the board nobody else has: the FERS annuity supplement. Retire on an immediate, unreduced FERS annuity before 62 — at your minimum retirement age with 30 years, or at 60 with 20 — and OPM pays a monthly supplement approximating the Social Security you earned during federal service, from retirement until the month you turn 62.

Why it changes the claiming math

The supplement is a built-in bridge. It means an eligible FERS retiree at 57 or 60 already has Social-Security-like income flowing — which removes the most common reason people claim actual Social Security at 62: “I need the money now.” When the supplement stops at 62, the question isn’t “claim or starve” — it’s whether your TSP and other assets can carry the bridge a few more years while your real benefit grows 8% per year of waiting. Often, the household’s survivor math says the higher earner should let it grow.

Two rules that trip people

The 2025 repeal every CSRS-connected family should hear

The Social Security Fairness Act (January 2025) repealed the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset. If you, your spouse, or a parent were ever told a government pension would slash Social Security or spousal benefits — that answer changed, retroactively to 2024 benefits. Anyone who skipped claiming a spousal or survivor benefit because of GPO should revisit it now.

Deciding the TSP rollover at the same time? The two decisions share one bloodstream — our TSP Rollover Guide and the claiming calculator were built to be used together.
