Medicare Supplement (Medigap) in Virginia

Medicare pays a lot, but not everything. Medigap is the private coverage that fills the deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance Parts A and B leave behind. Here is how it works in Virginia, and the one window that matters more than everything else.

The three facts that simplify everything

1. Plans are standardized by letter, A through N. Every company selling Plan G in Virginia must provide exactly the same Plan G benefits. The plan letter determines what is covered; the company determines what you pay and how the premium behaves over time. That means you are really shopping for two things: the right letter for your situation, and a company with a fair price and a stable rate history. (One naming trap: Medigap Plans A through N are not the same thing as Medicare Parts A and B.)

2. The premium is in addition to Medicare. A Medigap premium sits on top of your Part B premium, and Medigap does not include prescription coverage, so most people pair it with a separate Part D drug plan. Your true monthly health care cost in retirement is the sum of all three.

3. Timing is the whole ballgame.

Your six-month open enrollment window begins the month you are both 65 and enrolled in Part B. During those six months, companies must sell you any plan they offer regardless of your health, at standard rates. After the window closes, an insurer can generally ask health questions and may decline you or charge more. This is one of the most consequential deadlines in all of retirement planning, and it passes quietly.
